ABOUT THE PROGRAM: This ZOOM Webinar presented in collaboration with Nyack ARTWALK™ commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the installation of Being of Light: Image of the Human Soul by Mariel Farlow.

This 30-min ZOOM presentation by Clare Bowes Sheridan will explore Mariel Farlow’s vision, her creative process, and the 1980 installation of this 20-foot, concrete monolith on the grounds of the Rockland County Courthouse in New City, NY. Then, we will examine the true meaning of this extraordinary sculpture and how its misinterpretation resulted in political controversy. We’ll delve into the sculpture’s place in popular culture and learn about an effort to install Farlow's artist’s statement and poem on the base of the sculpture, as she had originally planned, so viewers can reflect on the artist’s intent.

This presentation is also a companion to “Mariel Farlow—Being of Light,” a special mini-exhibit within the Historical Society of Rockland County's semi-permanent exhibition, Rockland Voices, open to the public Wednesdays-Fridays between 1 and 4 pm by prearranged reservation. www.RocklandHistory.org.

Yes, Men Are Apes -- As Are Women

Breaking the Cycle: A Conversation with Rebecca Coffey

WHEN: Thursday April 29, 2021 at 7pm

and rebroadcast April 29 & 30, 2022

FEE: $Free

ABOUT: Yes, Men Are Apes — As Are Women

Humans are great apes, a taxonomic family of primates that includes orangutans, gorillas, and pans (chimps and bonobos). The procreative job of the human male is to spread his seed widely. The job of the female is to be selective about whose seed she receives. Those are dramatically different biological blueprints. And therein lies one explanation for the many recent headlines about sexual misconduct by men. Our animal nature is undeniable. But is beastly behavior inevitable? Can understanding animal behavior liberate us from gender inequality?

Rebecca Coffey will explore these questions and more in a conversation with event producers Paulette Ross and Penny Peace.

Coffey will use science, nature and a bit of humor to explore how men and women differ and how a better understanding of animal behavior might liberate us from gender inequality. A conversation will follow led by Paulette Ross and Penny Peace, both of SuffrageForward. Recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the goal of the program is to build on SuffrageForward’s past presentations which aim to foster enlightening, inspiring community conversations.

The program is free (registration required), and will begin at 7pm.

ABOUT REBECCA COFFEY:  Rebecca Coffey is a science journalist with broad national recognition. She contributes five features a month to Forbes.com, where she addresses evolution, science, health, and behavior. She has written regularly for Scientific American and Discover magazines, PsychologyToday.com, and Vermont Public Radio (where she was a frequent on-air contributor for almost a decade), and she also contributes science-informed op-eds to newspapers like The New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times, and to many radio and internet outlets. Coffey is also a humorist (McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, Defenestration, The Rumpus, a host of lit websites, and a book of literary humor) and a novelist (the highly praised, serio-comic Hysterical: Anna Freud’s Story). Kirkus Reviews has likened Coffey to journalist and humorist Mary Roach.

—> About : When Meredith Bergmann’s Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument was unveiled on August 26, 2020, it, in essence, broke Central Park’s bronze gender barrier. This panel discussion, via ZOOM Webinar, will explore the process of conceiving, advocating, and fundraising for the creation of this groundbreaking public sculpture.  The panelists will be artist Meredith Bergmann, Pam Elam, and Coline Jenkins, with moderator Clare Bowes Sheridan.  A live ZOOM chat will follow the webinar with invited guests including: Shirley Crabbe, Susan Deeks, George Ivolin, Risa Hoag, Carol Simon Levin, Susanna Rich and Maya Wilson.

“We are delighted to have been able to re-schedule this panel discussion for November 19th,” said Paulette Ross, chair of SuffrageForward.  “Although we cannot gather in person, as we had originally planned, we were happy to pivot and offer it virtually.  And what’s exciting is that we can reach an even broader audience through this webinar format,” she noted.

The journey of envisioning and creating this sculpture was spearheaded by Monumental Women, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization created in 2014, with the goal of creating the first statue of real women in Central Park. This journey had its own share of hurdles. Contending with NYC bureaucracy and permits was as massive a task as the process of sculpting the work. Monumental Women has raised over $1.5 million, with the help of private donations and the Girl Scouts, to fund the statue.

The three women of the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument were selected by Monumental Women for their historic victories in women’s suffrage, women’s civil rights and the abolition of slavery. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth made history again when they became the first real women to be memorialized in NYC’s iconic Central Park.  Although each of the three women are shown hard a work, having a vigorous conversation, it is Bergmann’s hope that viewers will make up their own story about who is saying what.  Of the 840 acres in the 166-year-old park, where there are 23 statues of men, there are only a handful of sculptures of women— all based on fictional characters. This monument is sited on Literary Walk, near Sir Walter Scott and William Shakespeare.

Bergmann’s powerful homage to these remarkable women depicts a coalition of like-minded people and serves as an inspiration for further study and activism by young girls and women of all ages. With the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument, Monumental Women and Bergmann begin to correct the scarcity of commemorative sculptures highlighting women’s achievements.

When the 14-foot monument was unveiled on August 26, 2020, it was the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. 2020 is also the 200th anniversary of the birth of Susan B. Anthony.

The distinguished panelists will discuss the 6-year journey of this process and its significance.

Meredith Bergmann has been creating both private and public sculpture that addresses complex themes, such as social justice and human rights, in an accessible, beautiful, and provocative way, to challenge viewers and inspire change. Bergmann’s largest public commission, unveiled in 2003, was for the Boston Women’s Memorial on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston’s Back Bay. Her FDR Hope Memorial for New York City’s Roosevelt Island is to be completed in Spring 2020.

Pam Elam, the President of Monumental Women, has worked in various capacities for New York City government and its elected officials including: Coordinator at the Mayor’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs; Chief of Staff to a NYS Senator; and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Manhattan Borough President. Elam made her first public speech in support of Women’s Rights when she was 13 years old and has been organizing for women ever since, including in 2004 when she led the effort to approve legislation naming “Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton Corner” near the site where Anthony and Stanton published their newspaper, The Revolution.

Coline Jenkins is a legislator, author, television producer, and Vice President of Monumental Women. Jenkins comes from a long line of women activists including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, her great-great grandmother, and Harriot Stanton Blatch, her great-grandmother. Through the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Trust, of which she is co-founder and President, she is instrumental both in the advancement of women's rights and the preservation of the history of the women’s rights movement.

The moderator, Clare Bowes Sheridan, is the producer, writer and host of “Crossroads of Rockland History,” an award-winning radio show presented by The Historical Society of Rockland County. Before joining the Historical Society of Rockland County, she was Senior Vice President, Business Director at Sotheby’s for many years. This program is a collaboration of SuffrageForward and the Rockland Center for the Arts . SuffrageForward’s mission is not only to celebrate women’s right to vote, but to empower women now and in the future and create awareness among all people of the strength and resiliency of girls and women.

We sincerely thank our program sponsors: County of Rockland Tourism Department, our generous donors and our founding members.

THE WEB an installation by Cristina Biaggi

Rockland Center for the Arts and SuffrageForward hosted a “Meet the Artist” event on Sunday, September 13th, 1:30-3:30pm for  with Cristina Biaggi at the opening of the outdoor exhibition of THE WEB.  The outdoor installation will be on view through November 15, 2020.

Cristina Biaggi, Ph.D., has achieved international recognition for her varied and significant contributions to the field of Goddess-centered art and scholarly studies.  Her works are a reflection and extension of her lifelong interest in art, archaeology, women studies, and literature and classics, acquired at Vassar, Harvard and New York University.

THE WEB is an ancient archetypal symbol derived from animal art which, in its latest manifestation, has come to symbolize the women’s movement of the 80s and 90s.  The artwork is a 45 foot diameter, double sided cloth collage, which Biaggi created in the mid 80’s.   At the time Biaggi was rediscovering the power of women by visiting women’s encampments and taking part in peaceful protests and marches.  The panels that comprise the collage depict women’s political actions throughout the ages and throughout the world, and contain powerful symbology.

Cyndy Porter is the founder and owner of Success thru Style. She coaches professional women in discovering their personal brand and living it inside and out.

Cyndy is like most women in many ways. She was never taught how to feel beautiful. In fact, she was taught the opposite. She was a shy, sensitive, and insecure girl—a target for bullies. And she took everything to heart. She was even convinced that she wasn’t smart. This got in her way of personal and professional success. Eventually, she turned her life around and built a career. Now she has built her own company designed to do this for others. Using principles based in science, art, psychology, and business marketing, Cyndy has developed a unique personal branding and business coaching strategy and business that empowers women to have a powerful self-image and live their lives with poise and confidence.

Cyndy believes every woman deserves to feel beautiful. Every woman should leave her house with the confidence that she can take on the world. Cyndy has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Chico. She spent 20 years as a sales and marketing professional in a number of high tech organizations including WAIS, Kodak, and her final corporate position as a divisional Vice President of Marketing at AOL. Cyndy started her own business over ten years ago after she got certified as a professional photographer from Professional Photographers of America. It is her mission and the mission of her company, Success thru Style, to help women everywhere develop the confidence they need to show up in the world as their true self and succeed on their own terms. Two Schools in Hillburn

—>When:  February 27, 2020 at 6:30pm

—>Where:  The Lafayette Theatre, 97 Lafayette Ave, Suffern, NY 10901

—>Admission:  Adults $20; Students and Seniors $15.  Tickets available online or at the door.

STREAM THE FILM ON DEMAND

—>About:  "Two Schools in Hillburn," the documentary by Joe Allen that premiered in 2017, explores one of the most important moments in the history of civil rights and education in New York State. It was in the tiny village of Hillburn, Rockland County, in 1943 that Jim Crow laws forcing "colored"--African American, Native American, and other--children to attend a rundown, ramshackle schools while white children got to go to new, well-equipped schools were struck down. Thanks to the brave efforts of the families of 49 children who attended Brook School and a young NAACP attorney, Thurgood Marshall, who came to Hillburn, the practice ended, and families of children attending Brook were able to send them to Hillburn School. This took place more than a decade before Marshall gained notoriety by winning the Supreme Court case Brown v. the Board of Education, which tore down the legal grounds for separate-but-equal Jim Crow laws. The film tells the story of what Rockland and Hillburn were like during that time and looks at the key participants and events.

The screening (55 minutes) was followed by a Panel Discussion and Q&A with Joe Allen (filmmaker) and family members of the original students involved in the strike. The panel discussion and Q&A was moderated by Jamila Brathwaite, President of the African American Historical Society of Rockland County.

Panelists Included:

  • Bonnie Oblenis: The daughter of Wayne Powell Jr., Bonnie is a current Hillburn Village Trustee. Her grandparents were involved in the movement to integrate the Hillburn Schools.

  • Mary Galindez: The granddaughter of the late Thomas Ulysses Alexander, who was one of the people who described the injustice of separate Schools in Hillburn. As a U.S. postal employee, Mr. Alexander was not beholden to J. Edgar Davidson, the School Superintendent who also owned the Ramapo Iron Works that employed many Hillburn Parents of color. Thomas Alexander is an inductee in the Rockland County Civil Rights Hall of Fame. Mary is also an educator on the Suffern Central School District.

  • Kendal Farrison Charles: Kendall is the daughter of Frances Ellen Van Dunk, whose parents had three daughters registered as students in the dilapidated Brook School, even though the Main School was in sight of their home. Like many parents at the time, her grandparents insulated their children from the ugliness of the situation.

  • Joe Allen: In addition to Two Schools in Hillburn, Allen produced and directed 20 Million Minutes, which tells the story of a community organization that took on the International Olympic Committee to win a moment of silence to recognize the eleven Israeli athletes murdered by terrorists at the 1972 Olympics in Munich; the second, Hudson Valley Honor Flight: Generation Bridge, is about taking World War II veterans to Washington, DC, to visit the monuments in their honor and then to schools to talk about the war and their experiences.

Susan Beatini, a student at the Rockland Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center, participated in the preparation of a dinner at the famed James Beard Foundation in New York City, on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2020.

As part of its commitment to empower women of the future and to promote a culture that enables women to achieve their highest potential, SuffrageForward is pleased to share the photo album of this extraordinary event.

Beatini assisted Chef Danielle Duran Zecca to prepare a unique “Mexitalian” Valentine’s Day dinner which combined Zecca’s Mexican culinary heritage with that of her Italian husband.

Paulette Ross, chair of SuffrageForward, states “Suffrage Forward’s initiative is not only to celebrate women’s right to vote but also to raise the awareness of the very real need for all of us to look to ourselves, to our organizations, to our communities to find opportunities that could impact the lives of our women now and in the future.  We thank Chef Danielle Duran Zecca, who will be preparing the James Beard dinner, for her immediate, no-questions-asked positive response to our proposal.  This is the response we need to hear more often.”
